Frequently Asked Questions

How can I best support your work?

  • Become a patron! This supports me both financially and emotionally.
  • Buy my books
  • Buy my merch
  • Ask for my books at libraries
  • Rate my work on Goodreads, Amazon, iTunes, etc.
  • Spread the word

Are you open for personal commissions?

About once a year, I open up for commissions for animal portraits (sorry, no humans). I announce these rare moments on social media (TwitterFacebookInstagramPatreon),
so follow me there for the latest updates.

Can you create a comic for my magazine/website/etc?

Depending on my workload, occasionally I have time for this type of thing. Contact me with the following information:

  • Theme for the comic/issue and/or why you think my work would be a good fit
  • Specs (page count, dimensions, etc.)
  • Timeline / due date
  • Rights and reprint information
  • Amount you’re offering for payment

Do you do pro-bono work?

No. All my charitable energy is funneled into my databases, other community work I have chosen to do specifically, and favorite charities I’ve set aside money to donate to each year. There’s only so much I can give!

Do you do in-person visits?

I love visiting schools to talk about my craft! I’m also happy to guest at conventions, book fairs and whatnot, depending on the timing and funds available. For small classes and book clubs with a tighter budget, I sometimes do video chats. Email me with your request, timeline, and budget.

Note: Due to the pandemic, I am only doing virtual panels (no lectures, readings, or workshops) for far-away places, and only attending outdoor (masked, vaccinated, socially distant) events if they’re local.

Can I hire you to draw a comic I wrote?

Sorry, I’m too busy drawing my own ideas to spend time drawing anybody else’s. I am occasionally open to illustration gigs, however. Feel free to email me an inquiry.

Can I ask you for your advice about art/writing/publishing?

For advice-seekers, I have a limited number of consulting/pick-my-brain and mentorship
slots available on Patreon. I also occasionally provide mentorship through colleges.

Will you promote my work?

I’m a cartoonist, not a promoter! However, I do occasionally call out work that has personally touched me. I also regularly feature the work of exceptional marginalized cartoonists via my Cartoonists of Color, Queer Cartoonists, and Disabled Cartoonists databases. I don’t accept requests, however I’ve created a FAQ that includes information on how to best angle one’s self to become a featured creator. Read it here.

Will you introduce me to your famous friend?

Haha no…

Will you follow me on social media?

Nowadays, I generally follow people back if I know them pretty well in real life. I sometimes make exceptions for people who engage with me in interesting, fun ways. Bonus points if you’re an animal lover and can make me laugh. (Note: If you instantly DM me with spam the moment I follow you, I will unfollow immediately)

How did you get to where you are in your career?

Short answer: I’ve been making and publishing comics since 1997, and I had my first book published in 2011. That’s a good 14 years of toiling in obscurity, so really there’s no easy answer to how I got to where I am.

If you really want the gruesome details, check out the Press page, where I’ve collected many interviews I’ve done over the years.

Who are some of your favorite creators?

I made a list of book recommendations.
