Queer Comics Expo

In addition to tabling at the Expo, MariNaomi was a speaker on the following panels:

  1. “Non-monosexual Characters in Comics” Moderated by Tara Madison Avery and accompanied by Tyler
Cohen and Ingrid Mouth. Bisexual, pansexual, or fluid, cartoonists with non-monosexual orientations
have unique stories to tell. From coming out to dating, bi/pan/fluid comics bring new perspectives to
the LGBT community. Tara Madison Avery discussed their comics and experiences with Ingrid Mouth,
Tyler Cohen, MariNaomi and Dylan Edwards.
  2. “Publishing Queer: Producing LGBT Comics and Graphic Novels” Moderated by Zan Christensen and
accompanied by Jon Macy and Ed Luce. Queer-themed comics are gaining more visibility and shelf space
than ever. What are the challenges and rewards of producing this work and getting it in front of an
audience hungry for the material? How can it be marketed and publicized, both to an LGBTQ readership
and beyond? Should queer cartoonists self-publish or look to established publishers? How does a queer
comics publisher like Northwest Press operate?
  3. “Teaching Queer: LGBTQ Comics in the Classroom” As both comics and queer narratives become
increasingly mainstream, the academic world has been embracing both in fits and starts. What
challenges and benefits are there to teaching LGBTQ graphic novels and comics in the classroom?
What resources and advice are there for teachers who want to tackle this material? How can
cartoonists create work that is academia-friendly and approach lecturing and teaching themselves?
Moderated by Justin Hall, accompanied by Zan Christensen, Tyler Cohen,
    Dylan Edwards and Jeanette Roan.
